A IPHE (International Partnership for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Economy) Stakeholders Forum was held in Chile with key participation from public and private sector professionals. The meeting, organized by Chile’s Ministry of Energy, the French Embassy in Chile, and the Delegation of the European Union in Chile, served as a platform to discuss the advances and challenges of hydrogen at a global and regional level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The forum took place within the framework of the 43rd IPHE Steering Committee Meeting, which Chile hosted for the first time. The IPHE is an intergovernmental cooperation forum comprising 26 countries and the European Commission, with the purpose of driving the development of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in the energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the event, Ana Mar\u00eda Ruz, executive director of Corfo’s Green Hydrogen Committee, highlighted Chile’s industrial potential. She noted that green ammonia projects worth 40 billion dollars are expected to reach their final investment decisions in 2026, with a projected production of 5.9 million tons. She also mentioned the green ammonia project by Total EREN, with an investment exceeding 16 billion dollars, and HIF Global’s Faro del Sur project in Magallanes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ruz also emphasized that Chile’s low GDP growth over the last ten years makes hydrogen production a crucial industrial opportunity for the country. In this context, she announced that Corfo has awarded the installation of the first electrolyzer factories in the Metropolitan and Biob\u00edo regions to three business consortiums, with a public investment of 25.6 million dollars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As part of their visit, an IPHE delegation, with the participation of DG GROW, EUDEL, and the French Embassy, traveled to Punta Arenas for a two-day mission. The objective was to get a firsthand look at key projects in the region, a strategic hub for green hydrogen. The delegation visited ENAP’s Cabo Negro portand HIF’s Haru Oni e-fuel pilot plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the tour, regional authorities, such as Governor Jorge Flies, and industrial stakeholders reiterated their strong interest in green hydrogen development. Although the launch of production and the development of port infrastructure for renewable H2 are slow processes, the Haru Oni project (HIF) is expected to enter its commercial phase next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
During the visit to the ENAP port, the delegation was informed about plans to expand its facilities to support both its Vientos Patag\u00f3nicos wind project and HIF’s e-fuels production. In this complex, EDF has partnered with ENAP with the goal of producing 400,000 tons of ammonia per year from green hydrogen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The delegation also visited HIF Global’s Haru Oni pilot plant, the world’s first operational e-fuel plant, which produces 130,000 liters of e-gasoline and 323 tons of e-methanol annually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
