On March 18, female leaders from Latin America and Europe met in Berlin to promote the green hydrogen industry with a gender focus within the framework of the event “Empowering Energy: Gender Equality in the Evolution of Green Hydrogen in Latin America and the Caribbean”.
The event, held as part of the Berlin Energy Transition Dialogue 2024 (BETD), one of the world’s most important forums on promoting renewable energy, featured prominent figures such as Michelle Bachelet, former President of Chile; Elisa Facio, Minister of Industry, Energy and Mining of Uruguay; Katrin Uhlig, Member of the Bundestag; Sabine Amirdschanjan, representative of the European Union; Ingrid Hoven, Director of GIZ Germany; and Gloria Alvarenga, Director of Integration, Access and Energy Security of OLADE.
In the opening, Stefan Wenzel, Parliamentary State Secretary of the BMWK, highlighted the importance of active collaboration with women’s networks and organizations to attract, retain and leverage female talent in the renewable energy sector.
Sabine Amirdschanjan, representative of the EU, emphasized the need to consider inclusion and gender perspective in the hydrogen value chain to promote the new green hydrogen industry. “We have the opportunity to contribute to a just energy transition and to address energy poverty both in Chile and in the EU,” she said.
Former President Bachelet, the event’s keynote speaker, stressed the crucial moment the energy industry is facing to facilitate the incorporation of more women on an equal footing with men. “An emerging industry like green hydrogen, where there is a lot of room to do new things, in a different way, is the ideal space to make this leap. This will not only benefit women, but undoubtedly the industry and society as a whole,” she said.
The meeting in Berlin brought together leading female leaders from Latin America and Europe to promote the green hydrogen industry with a gender focus, promoting inclusion and diversity in this emerging sector.
